A Science Centre that makes phenomena Understandable and Experiential
At the heart of Aurora is the high-quality, internationally recognized research conducted in Lapland. Arctic research covers a wide range of fields from atmospheric and space observations to geophysics, geology and minerals, as well as the environment, technology, culture, and the phenomena of northern living.
The science centre is planned as a new landmark building in the centre of Sodankylä architecturally strong and international in scope. Join us in building a new kind of Arctic hub for knowledge and discovery.

What Do We Mean by Immersive?
Aurora is built around research carried out in Lapland, with the aim of creating a surprising, inspiring, and multi-sensory science centre where science becomes something you can truly experience.
For us, immersion means combining modern technology, interactive exhibitions, and multi-sensory learning in a way that sparks curiosity and makes learning intuitive and engaging.
Aurora will offer a compelling leisure destination where science and technology are brought closer to people through everyday phenomena and hands-on experiences. The goal is to guide visitors toward scientific curiosity, offer opportunities to learn something new, and above all to experience, explore, and be inspired.
Opening Up the Science Behind Phenomena
Our goal is to make the underlying principles of natural, scientific, and environmental phenomena easy to understand and engaging for visitors of all ages.
Experiences on Many Levels
Aurora offers content for both casual visitors and those who want to dive deeper. Everyone can experience the centre in their own way.
A Place for Encounters and Collaboration
Aurora provides an inspiring environment for events, workshops, and partnerships.
It is a space where researchers, companies, educational institutions, and visitors can meet, exchange ideas, and create something new together.
Why Sodankylä?
Sodankylä is one of the world’s key hubs for Arctic research.
The research institutions involved in the science centre form a unique ecosystem:
- The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory of the University of Oulu has conducted Finland’s longest-running aurora research, Arctic monitoring, and natural hazard observation since 1914.
- Finnish Meteorological Institute
- Geological Survey of Finland, a leading expert in minerals, groundwater, aggregates, geothermal energy, and other geological resources. It provides independent research and services to support society and industry in the transition to a sustainable, carbon-neutral world.
This strong research foundation makes Sodankylä a place where Arctic knowledge is part of everyday life and the future.
Where Are We Now?
Aurora is progressing step by step. The current focus is on planning, refining the concept, securing funding, and building partnerships.
Become a Partner
Aurora Science Centre is built through collaboration. We are looking for partners who want to be part of creating a new science and tourism destination in Arctic Finland.
What We Are Looking For
- Funding and sponsorship (partnership models and visibility opportunities)
- Investment and development partners to design and build a modern, sustainable landmark in a central location in Sodankylä
- Tourism and service partners (supporting services, visitor experience, and overall concept)
